16 years ago Kendall Oliver left a career as a nursing home administrator that spanned 25 years, to start his own business. Since then he has owned and operated seven senior living properties.  In 2000 he built Cambridge Hills, a 120 bed assisted living facility in Roxboro North Carolina, his first community built from the ground up. “I realized that to develop a culture like I wanted, I needed to start from scratch,” says Kendall . “I wanted to create an environment where the staff shared my vision and were empowered to make decisions that would enable them to achieve our goals. This vision began with a simple idea, to create a place where I would want to live or have my mother live.”

With the success with Cambridge Hills, Kendall was convinced that he could extend his vision and operational experience to independent living. So in 2009 the Cambridge Village Senior Living brand was born. The first community under this brand was built near Raleigh North Carolina.  “Cambridge Village of Apex was designed to attract seniors looking for an active lifestyle. We wanted to provide the amenities attractive to the current generation of retirees and also look forward and anticipate what the next generation would see as important,” say Kendall. “This included a state of the art wellness center with indoor heated pool, an in- community theater and plenty of area for socializing with friends and family.” As importantly the staff included a full time Wellness Director and full time Enrichment coordinator. “Early on we felt it was important to invest in the necessary staffing to ensure we could deliver on the resident experience we were after,” says Kendall.

Cambridge Village of Apex is celebrating its 4th anniversary this year and many visiting for the first time think the community is brand new. Kendall’s passion for the appearance of the building and the grounds was evidenced when the town of Apex recognized Cambridge Village with their annual Business Property Landscape award in 2013. With construction underway for Phase 3, the Apex community has proven to be the premiere retirement destination in Southwest Wake County.

Always looking for ways to improve is another attribute Kendall & co-owner COC Investment Group brings to his business. “The advantage of a company where the owner stays involved is our ability to remain open to new ideas from both residents and staff, and make the necessary changes when needed. This philosophy of new ideas is evident in the newest Cambridge Village community, now open in Wilmington NC. Kendall and COCIG recognize that folks like the concept of being able to age in place. “One trend in senior living is clear, folks want to age in place,” say Kendall. “Even active seniors who want to continue to live independently, look for communities that offer higher levels of care, should they need it. We wanted to offer these options, so we partnered with the Davis Community, a well-recognized health care provider in Wilmington. Together we will be able to provide a wide range of supportive care services that will allow our residents to enjoy the Cambridge Village lifestyle and also get the healthcare support they may need,” says Kendall.

Expanding the Cambridge Village brand is certainly in the plans. “We are actively looking for locations that fit the profile for our format of active senior living. With our past experience successfully operating retirement facilities, combined with the demand for all inclusive apartment – home rental communities that offer an active lifestyle, the Cambridge Village brand will be adding locations for some time to come,” Kendall concludes.
